Preparing for your DIY coffee table project

What use for my coffee table?

The first question to ask yourself before starting to create your coffee table is: What will be the use of it? The coffee table often placed next to the sofa can indeed fulfill several functions according to lifestyle.

Some, fans of TV sets, will use it as table for occasional dining. For a question of comfort, it will therefore have to be a little higher than your sofa with a larger top.
Others do not attribute any particular use to it except as a decoration object where you can put your glass, family photos, decorative objects, or even a lamp...
Finally, it can take the form of a storage coffee table for more functional use: books, smartphones, board games, headsets, etc.

In Japan, China or India, it is best to sit on the floor during meals. This tradition dates back to ancient times when people used low tables during meals. The use of coffee tables in the Arab world is also very popular. Scribes equip their tables with drawers to store painting and writing tools.

What dimensions for my DIY coffee table?

Another element to take into account before starting to create your coffee table is: how much space do I have? The standard dimension for a coffee table top is 100x60cm.

If you have a large living room, you can bet on a rectangular tray of 120x90cm or a square tray of 120X120cm. THE round coffee tables are also ideal for large living rooms. On the contrary, if you have little space for your coffee table, a tray of 100x40cm will be ideal.

Which table legs to choose for a coffee table?

As we have seen previously, depending on its usefulness and the space we have, the coffee table can take on the appearance of a side table, a pedestal table, a side table... There are 3 categories of table legs for coffee tables:

  • Table legs less than 25 cm in height : for a very low table with a contemporary look
  • Table legs between 25 and 40 cm high : for a coffee table that adapts to all styles and shapes
  • Table legs over 40 cm high: for side tables or side tables.

What style for my DIY coffee table?

Coffee tables adapt to all styles of architecture: contemporary, industrial and traditional. They fit perfectly into family homes, whether classic or revisited.

For an industrial-style coffee table :

Opt for a fairly bulky coffee table. We recommend that you use the GATO industrial table legs 33 cm which can also be used as a trestle to be screwed under any type of worktop or tray.

For a minimalist metal coffee table :

To make a side table, a side table, a coffee table or a very low table, we recommend the TSTAR metal table legs composed of three metal wires. These legs are available in 17 cm, 24 cm, 33 cm, 41 cm.

For a wooden coffee table :

Coffee tables can be made from wooden pallets. You can use pallet boards stacked on top of each other. For the feet, we opt for authentic beech table legs, from sustainably managed French forests: the STIC 33 or 41 cm

For a unique and original table, opt for a manufacturing with recycled materials.

As you will have understood, the possibilities for making a coffee table are immense. The only limit, your imagination! :)
